Sheffield artist Sharon Mossbeck is raising funds through crowdfunding site Indiegogo. to launch a participatory cross stitch project with the title “The Thread of Life”. Inspired by the Fates of Greek mythology Sharon is will be asking people to interpret a cross stitch pattern of a strand of DNA in their own way.

In her words:

The Thread of Life is a Project in two parts. Based on the mythological Greek figures of the Fates, or Moirai, I will create work based on the thread of life; the Moirai spinning, allotting and cutting each person’s life thread, and therefore determining a person’s lifespan. I am very keen to help to change the perception of cross-stitch in contemporary art, and as such I believe that it is the perfect medium for the project.

Each participant is free to pick their own colours, materials and embellishments, Sharon only asks that the piece be stitched on 14ct aida so each piece is the same size. All submitted pieces will be part of an art exhibition next year, towards the end of 2015.

At the time of writing Sharon has raised £242 of her £650 goal. For more information see Sharon’s website or Indiegogo page.
